Exploring Virtual Reality and RoboticsIf you walked past any classroom last week you would have seen students at every grade level taking virtual trips to places like outer space and Ancient Greece. The first grade students took a 360 degree tour of the night time constellations right in their own classroom. Just take a look at some of the @LaureateAPS tweets to see more! |
Special Guest Speakers - Live and on SkypeIn the first week, we had so many truly interesting guests come and work with our Summer Laureate students! Fourth grade was visited by a physicist, third grade Skyped with an earthquake survivor in CA, and first grade got to do a Q&A with someone who worked on Airforce 1 for over 20 years. In addition to meeting all of these people, our students got to work with 4 talented Stembassadors from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology and 2 CAD competition winners from Abingdon Elementary School.

Summer Laureate a Temporary Construction SiteThere is so much building going on in our classrooms. Third grade student are building towers and testing them with a shake table. Fourth grade students have been working on constructing energy efficient designs with the help of a real architect. Second graders have been building life-size human bodies. Students are completing design challenges by building towers with limited supplies. You can see all types of cool Maker Ed inventions being created by the fifth graders everyday!

Exploring Electricity and Alternative Power SourcesMany classes have begun to introduce circuitry to the students. Some of this work will be used for Makerspace creations which will have electrical circuits built into their designs. Fifth grade has been exploring SnapCircuits. Second graders learned about open and closed circuits and built some in the classroom. Fourth grade has been exploring the use of solar and nuclear energy as alternative power sources.
