It's hard to believe that we are already halfway through the 2016 session of Summer Laureate! Our first graders have investigated the four forces of flight (thrust, drag, lift, and weight) as well as Bernoulli's principle. A favorite activity so far has been using the Chatterpix iPad app to explain Bernoulli's principle. In the next few days, a QR code will be sent home with students with instructions on how to access the Chatterpix videos.
You'll definitely want to ask your first grader about the investigations we conducted to explore lift and thrust (including balloon rockets, loop airplanes and paper airplanes!). Our classes also had an opportunity to experience flight firsthand with Virtual Reality headsets and a flight simulator iPad application.
A visitor from Air Force One also came into our classrooms to speak about her experiences flying around the world and serving our president!
In addition, students have been exploring outer space, learning about different constellations and our solar system. Yesterday, students were able to reinforce what they knew about constellations using Ozobot robotics to code constellation paths. Ask your child what their favorite constellation is!
In the second half of Summer Laureate, students will continue to investigate the four forces of flight. Students will get the opportunity to learn about drones and flying model airplanes, as well as continue their explorations of outer space. In addition, our first graders will also learn about how animals fly.
Below are some photos from Ms. Gallagher and Ms. Nhan's classes from the past week. We have had such fun together and are looking forward to the next week and a half!
